COURSE DESCRIPTION
The great battle at Kurukshetra is surrounded by a spiritual revelation that pertains to the entire human race. After the great war of Kurukshetra, Yudhishthira, the eldest of the five Pandavas, struggles emotionally, stricken with grief and guilt over the widespread devastation and destruction of his own family members. Distracted by his inner turmoil, Yudhishthira was unable to perform his duty as king and this began to affect the kingdom of Hastinapura. Yudhishthira turned to Shri Krishna for consolation. Krishna took him to Bhishma who was lying on a bed of arrows, waiting for the proper moment to depart from the material world. Yudhishthira then asked Bhishma Pitamah for advice about the best means by which mankind could find true happiness and contentment, peace of mind, and relief from all bodily attachments and sorrows.
The Bhagavad Gita is the quintessence of the Mahabharata and a sermon delivered by Sri Krishna, while the Vishnu Sahasranama is a prayer sung by Bhishma as his farewell message to the Pandavas. The first narrator of the Mahabharata was sage Vaishampayana, who was a disciple of Lord Vyasadeva and narrated the Mahabharata to Janamejaya, son of Parikshit, grandson of Abhimanyu and great-grandson of Arjuna. If we observe the greatness of Yudhishthira, he did not want to propound his own theory about what his creator thought and the means to achieve him. We can see that while answering those 6 questions Bhishma answers more or less in reverse order, one first. He who daily chants the Sahasranama and glorifies the knower of the universe becomes beyond the bondage of life and all miseries.
The Bhagavad Gita is the root of the tree, while the Vishnu sahasranama is the fruit, with the style of Anushtupa-chanda; is a universal prayer to chant the thousand names of God and visualizing the greatness of creator. There are many commentaries on Shri Vishnu Sahasranama. Sri Sri Shankara was the first person to make a commentary providing an Advaita point of view. The function of the prayers written in these key verses has been manifold; It gives the satisfaction of listing the names of the Lord and praising Him. It is a way of passing the collection from one generation to the next through shruti-smriti method of learning, in which no written material is preserved.
There are seven important verses in Sanskrit called Gayatri, Ushnik, Anushtup, Brihati, Pankti, Trishtup, Jagati. Sanskrit letters (akshara also means imperishable) and the meters formed from them, when imbued with sound energy, produce vibrations (a series of vibrations of different amplitudes following each other in a specific way) Which do something good for the body. At a very basic level, it is a form of aerobic exercise for the brain to recite these from memory as each word refers to some related examples, Giridhari; This mountain (Giri) was held by Lord Krishna on his hand (Dhar), and later came to be known as Giridhari.
